What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

The purpose of a dental filling is to fill in a cavity, thereby stopping the decay from spreading and protecting the sensitive inner layers of a tooth. In the past, silver amalgam was the material of choice for fillings. However, it was quite dark and noticeable within a person’s smile. It also contained a lot of mercury, which raised health concerns for some patients.

Tooth-colored fillings are made out of a biocompatible composite resin, which is completely metal-free and mercury free. It can also be shade-matched to blend in beautifully with the color of the surrounding dentition.

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

The tooth-colored filling process is fast and comfortable. First, we may numb your tooth (if the cavity is not very deep, local anesthetic may not be necessary). Then, we will remove decayed tissue from within the cavity. Next, we insert the tooth-colored resin and harden it with a special curing light. To finish, we adjust the filling so it looks nice and will not interfere with your bite.

From beginning to end, your entire appointment may take less than an hour. Your tooth may be a bit sensitive afterward, but it should feel normal within a few days. You will be able to eat and drink right after you leave our office (or after any local anesthetic wears off).

The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Compared to silver amalgam fillings, tooth-colored fillings offer some remarkable benefits:

  • It is unlikely that anyone will notice you have a filling. Plus, unlike amalgam fillings, they will not stain the surrounding enamel.
  • With proper care, tooth-colored fillings can last for several years.
  • Less sensitivity. Metal fillings can expand and contract in response to temperature changes, which can cause sensitivity and damage. Tooth-colored fillings are not as reactive to temperatures.
  • Less tooth preparation. Less healthy dentition is removed when preparing a tooth for a tooth-colored filling than when preparing to place an amalgam filling.
  • No mercury. Although amalgam fillings are considered safe by many experts, some patients are concerned about their high mercury content. Tooth-colored fillings are absolutely mercury-free.
