Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing are part of the deep cleaning procedure that’s needed to get rid of the harmful plaque and bacteria buildup that’s causing gum disease. It focuses on the small spaces between the teeth and gums. Scaling is used to remove harmful substances, and root planing is performed to smooth out the roots of the teeth. Smooth tooth roots make it easier for the gums to heal and are more difficult for bacteria to reattach themselves to.
Antibiotic Therapy
After scaling and root planing is complete, the next step is to prescribe antibiotic therapy to fight any bacteria still in the mouth and encourage healing of the gums. We commonly prescribe ARESTIN®, which is applied directly to the pockets that form between the teeth and gums as gum disease progresses. The medication is slowly released over the course of a couple of weeks and continues to reduce harmful oral bacteria levels while you’re at home.
